Fytera

Under the Fytera brand, Selko markets novel phytogenics that help solve the complex challenges modern farm animals face. Selko has made a long-term commitment to developing the phytogenic space.

We have a team of highly qualified, leading phytotechnology experts at Nutreco’s Garden of the Future, which is located in Switzerland’s ”phyto-valley,” where traditional knowledge on the application of plant-derived products has long been preserved. Our team is now translating this knowledge into a science-driven discovery and development approach to harness the power of plants for animal production.

Fytera Perform

Phytogenics are based on secondary plant metabolites – those that are not directly involved in the plant’s growth or reproduction but help it survive in its environment. These metabolites have co-evolved with the animal kingdom and have the potential to interact with receptors in the animal (e.g., those located on the cells lining the intestinal tract) to elicit a broad range of biological responses.

When used for animal feed, we call these secondary plant metabolites ‘phyto-actives’. For our Fytera products, we carefully select and combine those plants and their phyto-actives that produce the desired response to the target challenge in the target animal. We call this: harnessing nature’s complexity to tackle the complex challenges our farm animals face!

Black pepper

Dried Piper nigrum berries are the source of black pepper, an essential ingredient in animal feed additives. Originating in India, Piper nigrum, the Latin name for black pepper, is referred to as the "lord of spices." It includes piperine, a bioactive substance with antioxidant qualities. Black pepper improves palatability, increases appetite, and is particularly renowned for facilitating the absorption of other phyto-actives as well as nutrients in animal feed.

Chili

Chili, derived from Capsicum plants, notably Capsicum annuum, finds purpose in animal feed additives due to its active compound, capsaicin. This native spice from Latin America has thermogenic qualities that enhance animals’ metabolism and energy usage. It also has strong anti-inflammatory effects that support gut health in animals.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of trees of the genus Cinnamomum. It is widely used in the kitchen for its flavour, which it derives from its essential oil and principal component, cinnamaldehyde, as well as numerous other constituents including eugenol. In animal feed, cinnamon is used for its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.  Cinnamon has also been shown to enhance nutrient absorption.

Clove

The fragrant flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum are the source of clove, a flavourful ingredient in animal feed additives. Cloves, or Eugenia caryophyllata in Latin, are known for their bioactive ingredient eugenol. The phyto-actives in clove have shown to thicken the inner intestinal mucus layer, thereby strengthening the animals’ own defence mechanisms.

Garlic

Scientifically referred to as Allium sativum, garlic is a powerful addition to animal feed additives. This bulbous plant is native to Central Asia and has been farmed for many years. Allicin, the plant's main bioactive ingredient, is included in the Latin term Allium sativum. Renowned for its antibacterial characteristics, garlic also aids digestive health in animals by strengthening the tight junctions between intestinal cells lining the gut.

Oregano

Scientifically referred to as Origanum vulgare, oregano is proven to be a powerful addition to animal feed. Oregano has essential oils that are high in thymol and carvacrol. These substances exhibit potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities that support animals’ immune systems and digestive health.

Poultry

To feed an ever-growing world population, the production of food needs to be as efficient as possible. Poultry products are an excellent source of nutrition, available and acceptable to a large part of the world’s population and, importantly, with an excellent conversion of feed into high-quality animal protein. The poultry industry has evolved and professionalised over the past decades, and we have gained a great deal of knowledge and insight into birds’ nutritional needs and how to fulfil these in response to production targets formulated by our customers. With our Fytera range of products, we are creating additional value beyond feed formulation by supporting birds’ optimal health and performance in a wide range of circumstances.

Swine

Swine producers face many challenges – and biosecurity and animal health rank high on the list., We can provide crucial support to enable a sow to care for her offspring and let her piglets hit the ground running. Explore how the phyto-actives contained in our Fytera portfolio for swine interact with the animal’s immune system and the intestinal tract.

Ruminants

Ruminants are marvellous animals – they can utilize feed ingredients that are not in competition with human food, are productive in an incredibly wide range of circumstances and provide highly valued animal protein and other products. On the other hand, especially in high-performing production systems, dairy and beef cattle face many challenges related to performance, health (transition management, for example), and sustainability. Our Fytera portfolio provides support for various ruminant species and life stages aimed at making dairy and beef farming both sustainable and profitable.
