Reducing the risk of mould in raw materials and feed

During growth, harvesting and storage, moulds can develop when raw materials or feed are exposed to adverse weather conditions or through other factors that can cause kernel damage. If left untreated, raw material and final feed quality will decrease, with the ensuing risk of mycotoxin contamination. Although these influences cannot always be controlled, there is a way to reduce mould formation in raw materials.

Improving feed mill efficiency through moisture management

Adding water to feed during the production process can help improve the efficiency of your feed mill. For example, lowering press resistance reduces the energy required for the pelletisation process, ensuring that production runs more efficiently by decreasing the risk of blockages. The result is increased production capacity and pellet durability, reduced formation of fines and therefore less re-pelleting. Keeping feed moisture at an optimal level to ensure smooth pressing without increasing the risk of mould formation can be a challenge. The solution is to add Fylax Forte and water at the same time.

The surfactants in Fylax Forte increase water distribution through the treated product, improving its anti-mould effects in two ways. Firstly, they ensure that Fylax Forte and water are evenly distributed throughout the feed material, thereby guaranteeing comprehensive anti-mould treatment. Secondly, they improve the water-binding capacity of feed materials. As a rule, the less free water present, the smaller the chance of unwanted mould development. [read more]

Shelf life estimation test for grains and final feed

Selko offers a shelf-life estimation test to help feed producers decide whether or not to use a mould inhibitor. During the test, feed material is stored under the most optimal conditions for moulds, i.e. at a high temperature and at almost 100% humidity. The time spent under these extreme conditions without mould growth is referred to as stress test days. Selko laboratories can correlate the stress test days to shelf life.

Fylax Forte dosage analysis

After the presence of moulds has been established, Selko will perform a dose-response analysis to advise on the optimal dosage of Fylax Forte required to prolong the shelf life of the raw material.
