Selko improves food quality

During the Asian Pig and Poultry seminar in Bangkok, recently held from 7th – 10th of February, Selko Feed Additives showed several approaches to cope with lower quality raw materials while maintaining animal health and food safety. A range of innovative feed additives, complementary in safeguarding animal performance and food safety, were presented. Both to preserve feed quality as well as to limit the effect of mycotoxins in animals.

In an era of increasing volatility in raw material prices and availability, being able to secure sufficient raw materials of acceptable quality is becoming one of the main challenges for the livestock industry. In an effort to reduce feed cost and to obtain sufficient feed raw materials, livestock producers are often forced to make use of unconventional protein and carbohydrate sources or materials of lower quality. Although feed additives are not able to replace professional quality management systems, they can be complementary in safeguarding animal performance and food safety. Maarten van der Heijden, Business Manager Health & Preservation explained the importance of protecting the raw materials against moulding, such as the use of special blends of organic acids or activated propionates. These are the main ingredient of Fylax Forte, a proven and effective mould controller in animal feed.

Besides, mycotoxins can be present in feedstuffs at unknown levels. The TOXO range offers a total solution against a broad spectrum of mycotoxins produces by moulds. Pierre van Zon, Product Manager Mycotoxin Control, explained in detail how multiple strategies are combined to protect the animals against the negative effects. Studies and field trials at Universities showed an improved performance with mycotoxin contaminated feed. TOXO products are being marketed globally and first experiences in Asian countries are exceeding expectations.
